Lauderdale County, Mississippi: Four Familes came off the press in January 2002.
Compiled by William S. Smith, this book deals with the McLaurins, Simmonses,
Stevensons, and Smiths,
families that lived in Lauderdale County between 1835 and 1936, along
with their tributary families.
All are covered as far back as data could be found, with some of the
lines extending back to the
immigrant and beyond.
The 30 chapters on the families are presented chronologically in almanac
style. Notes are found at the
end of each chapter.
The remaining chapters are devoted to 48 background sketches on a variety
of topics intended
to give a more complete picture of life for the people in Lauderdale
County and in the South in general.
The subjects covered include agriculture, Charleston, religion, the
village of Lauderdale, medicine,
Meridian, migration, milling, tanning, the "New South", Selma, and
slave trading, just to mention a few.
There are many photographs, transcriptions of wills and letters, maps,
sketches and tables. The exhaustive
index is presented in 34 triple-columned pages, a feature that makes
the book a very valuable research tool.
The 615 page book is handsomely printed and bound, Smyth-sewn and hard-covered.
Post-paid copies may be ordered by sending a check for $35 to the compiler:
